Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 20% of Earth’s land area and 6% of its total surface area. With nearly 1.4 billion people, it accounts for about 18% of the world’s human population. Africa’s population is the youngest among all the continents. Average age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Based on 2024 projections, Africa’s population will reach 3.8 billion people by 2099.

Africa is the ‘cradle of humankind’. Fossils found in Africa, show that human beings and their closest relatives the gorilla and chimpanzees were born and evolved in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Africa is home to the world’s largest desert and home of the world’s longest river: The Nile. Most of the world’s diamonds come from Africa (around 95% as well as 50% of the world’s gold) and it produces 70% of the world’s cocoa beans!

The continent has up to 90 percent of the world’s chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. It holds 65 per cent of the world’s arable land and ten percent of the planet’s internal renewable fresh water source.

Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator. The continent includes the islands of Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

The number one reason for travelers visiting Africa is to embark on a wildlife safari or climb Kilimanjaro. While Africa certainly has some of the most extensive wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are many other reasons to travel to Africa.

Visiting Africa for the first time is an experience beyond description. It is a continent brimming with magic – from it’s immensely beautiful and diverse landscapes to its cultural richness and lifechanging wildlife encounters.

The Giza plateau

The pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx are among the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and indeed already were even in Roman times.

Each of these spectacular structures served as the final resting place of a king of the 4th Dynasty (c.2613–2494 BC). The Great Pyramid of Giza was built for king Khufu (c.2589–2566 BC), and the other two for Khafre and Menkaure, his son and grandson. Khufu’s pyramid is both the oldest and largest of the three, and the first building to exceed it in height would not be built for another 3,800 years!

Although the three pyramids dominate the plateau, they are in fact surrounded by many other monuments. Every king’s pyramid was just one element albeit the most important of a larger complex that included smaller, subsidiary, queens’ pyramids; an additional one that acted as a second, symbolic, tomb for the king, called a satellite pyramid; mastaba tombs for nobility and other family members; burials of actual and/or symbolic boats; and a pair of temples linked by a richly decorated causeway. One of these temples, called the valley temple, led into the pyramid complex, and was located on or near a body of water where boats could dock.

The other, the funerary (or upper) temple, stood near the base of the pyramid. Priests maintained the mortuary cult of the deceased king in these temples, where his divine aspect was worshiped, and where rich and diverse offerings were presented to his soul so he could have a peaceful and luxurious afterlife.

NASA’s Artemis II Mission Around the Moon

NASA’s Artemis II Mission:

Four astronauts aboard the agency’s Artemis II test flight around the Moon made history at 1:56 p.m. EDT on Monday, April 6, when they reached 248,655 miles from Earth—surpassing the farthest distance ever traveled by humans, a record previously set by Apollo 13 in 1970. The crew members are scheduled to splash down off the coast of San Diego at approximately 8:07 p.m. on Friday, April 10.
